I had the duck, black cherry and apple slaw, which was sold as a 'main course' but I was recommende d to add another 'side' dish at an extra cost of £5.

The apple slaw was awful - nothing more than shredded cabbage with a few token shards of apple!

My friend had the Thai curry but, again, was recommende d to order a side of rice.

I think you would be better to simply incorporat e these sides into the dish and add on another couple of pounds to the dish.

Judging by all the rave reviews, I don't know if we just experience d a bad night / the main chef's night off?

Just us then … Fortunately, this life-affirming cocktail (which Rollo makes so well) is one of the many delights in store.

But let’s start about half-way through the first bottle of wine, for it’s usually at this point we remember dinner is something you’re supposed to chew not drink.

Kicking off with the BITES menu, we insist you order the Crispy haggis bon-bons with a gorgeous whisky marmalade.

Our favourite: the Grilled halloumi, pomegranate, cashew and pumpkin seed salad.

Not only does it taste incredible, but the word “salad” makes us feel like we’re almost healthy, and in no way have a serious drinking problem.

The wine list is impressive, but really it is the food which steals the show.

The second Rollo, at the top of Broughton Street, focuses on local produce, serving food in an intimate, relaxed setting.

Branching out from the original Stockbridge Rollo on Raeburn Place, this new Broughton Street venue stretches the definition of ‘bar’ just a little bit – it’s more of an upmarket local bistro with a great food menu.

Yet its laid-back, informal vibe and love of good wine still ticks a few bar boxes, while the new location attracts a noticeably younger crowd than its big sister down the road.

Boats have been pushed out though for a well-sourced wine list including champagnes, cocktails and liqueurs.

So bar or bistro?

Rollo has some stylish dishes to enjoy, once you get your head round their confusing menu, finds Gaby Soutar What’s pate-tempura?”

Our second Bite was the “smoked salmon pate-tempura prawn-beetroot-pickle cucumber-toast” (£7).

It featured four fat triangles of sourdough, a quenelle of beetroot chutney, neat rolls of pickled cucumber ribbons and a large scoop of a very good and creamy smoked salmon pâté, plus two prawns in a thick batter cladding that was a bit heavy and solid to be described as tempura.

My pan-seared “tuna fillet-mango” (£11.50) was a rare hunk of fish topped with a glossy and fruity heap of the titular fruit, diced, with a bit of red onion, rocket and chilli in the mix.

So, if you can get your head round the menu, ignore the rocket, and not get too excited about the potential of a pate-tempura that does not exist (unless the chippie across the road, Cafe Piccante, decides to put it into production alongside the deep-fried Mars Bar) this place is rather lovely.

The menu is difficult to pigeon hole - bigger than tapas, more substantial than small plates, but still confident enough to encourage shared dining between the options of bites, bowls, plates and sides.

Ronnie and I met up at tea-time and were seated by the window, which was like sitting at the side of a Milan catwalk as the offices outside emptied onto bustling Broughton Street.

We decided to share a couple of bites - Ronnie opted for the Gyoza king prawns and slow cooked pork, a style of Japanese dumpling, with a chilli and honey dip, while yours truly had the blue cheese and cauliflower pate, with zucchini fritters and beetroot.

Ronnie went for affogato - a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a shot of espresso and Tia Maria on either side.

Value for money 4/5 - Edinburgh prices, but a capital experience.
