It serves a great range of drinks and the seasonal menu offers classic pub grub and contemporary meals using fresh local produce.

The atmosphere is good, the decor is stylish, and it's a friendly place.

There's also a pre-theatre menu, a pre-order option for those times when you don't have more than half an hour to spare, and a weekend brunch menu for those lazy recuperative meals on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

ELEMENT RESTAURANT REVIEW: ROSE STREET EDINBURGH

Boys Eat Scotland Element Restaurant Review – Rose Street, Edinburgh We didn’t know what to expect from our visit to Element but we were very pleasantly surprised.

For starter I chose Edinburgh Gin cured trout with pickled cucumber and dill crème fraîche (£6.25) while Raymond chose the twice baked Ayrshire of dunlop cheese soufflé (£5.75) The Edinburgh Gin cured trout was excellent and as you would expect worked really well with the combination of little cucumber pickled cubes and smooth dill crème fraîche.

Edinburgh Gin cured trout Raymond’s cheese soufflé was served on a bed of watercress with apple batons and it was a perfect way to start the meal.

Ayrshire of dunlop cheese soufflé Next I decided to sample the Aberdeen Angus Burger, but it was more the option of adding some haggis to the burger that attracted my attention rather than the burger itself.

Element Restaurant Review: North Sea cod We decided to share dessert and it was the Whisky and Coke sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream that jumped off the menu for both of us (£5.75).

Bucket-loads of beers and burgers, and more besides.

Like its sister pubs The Southern and The Holyrood 9A, Red Squirrel majors on beer and burgers and has a lot to offer in these ever-popular arenas.

For beer buffs there are brewer events; 20 lines, including four rotating taps; bottles from near and far; alcohol and gluten-free options and (of course?)

beer ice-cream.

As well as burgers, classic pub grub wears its hat at a slightly jaunty angle with the likes of venison sausage and mash or goat’s cheese salad.

Open for pretty much all meals, from breakfast and weekend brunch through to dinner, their Thursday steak night is worth a look as they source the meat locally from family-owned Shaws Fine Meats Opened in 2012 as one of the first bars not to serve pints, The Hanging Bat brews their own ales as well as stocking other UK beers and rare, imported options.

Cooked on a smokey BBQ, the dishes are made to compliment the drinks and include pulled pork, beer mac and cheese and a range of smoked hot dogs that were created especially for the bar.

Serving up the same moreish menu of Mexican street food, sharing dishes and favourites such as burritos, Topolabama is ideal for a laid-back dinner.

There’s also a dedicated vegetarian menu and an extensive list of margaritas, cocktails (including a tequila section), beers, wines and spirits.

Offering a wide variety of burgers, from the traditional to the more creative such as the Lothian Wolf (American cheese, Crispy Bacon, Pulled Pork in BBQ sauce, crispy fried onions and ‘Nduja mayo).

You'll find standard Scottish options on tap alongside some more exotic options.

Due to its location the pub is always busy and it attracts a mixed crowd.
