Milnes is a well established pub that is as popular for food as it is for drinks.

Cosy and relaxed atmosphere with further seating and bar available downstairs.

Traditional square bar with the emphasis on food as well as drink.

Element Bar has a cosy and welcoming atmosphere frequented by a more upmarket clientele.

The food is delicious and we sampled the Club Sandwich (pictured above) which after a few jars really hit the spot!

The Kenilworth in Edinburgh, Edinburgh Pub Review and Details

One of a string of boozers that line Rose Street, just on the edge of the Georgian New Town of Edinburgh, the Kenilworth is probably one of the more welcoming to passing strangers.

Situated in a former residence of Sir Walter Scott (one of whose novels gives the pub its name), the Kenilworth comprises a front island bar and a separate dining area to the back.

All in all the pub has a certain, almost austere, charm, with mirrors lining some of the walls and a lovely ceiling with chandelier lighting not quite banishing a certain dark atmosphere.

There are several real ales on hand pumps, including regular guest ales - all well kept and unsurprising as we discovered it's a Nicholson's pub.

We take a trip down one of the capital city's most popular pub crawl routes Edinburgh’s Rose Street is a popular destination for pub crawls.

The bars that inhabit Rose Street have remained pillars of pubcrawl and Edinburgh history for many years, each forming part of the city's rich past.

Rose Street Brewery has an ‘open-out’ front which makes the bar part of the street, meaning you can enjoy a bit of fresh air and the glorious Edinburgh streets while you make a quick stop off.

A short walk from Rose Street (west down Thistle Street, crossing Castle Street) lies The Oxford Bar.

Also a short but rewarding walk from Rose Street is The Cafe Royal, known as a “Golden Age” traditional pub not least for its interiors.

A certifiably insane taxi driver drops us at a perfect example of Edinburgh’s legendary Georgian architecture, a towering townhouse, all impossibly lofty ceilings, sweeping staircase (complete with original butlers trays) and stunning windows.

My Mr Smith is utterly smitten, not only with our restaurant with rooms, but with Edinburgh in general.

Our hosts are chef Paul Kitching and his partner Katie O’Brien, the former creating some kind of crazy chemistry in the restaurant’s open kitchen, the latter charming us to pieces on reception or serving breakfast.

Here’s how one dish appears on the menu, verbatim: ‘Smoked Haddock Made Interesting.

, buttered crumpets, very tiny summer vegetables, lightly curried creamy smoked salmon bisque (smoked salmon is always interesting)’.
