I'm french and new in town so I visited a small number of pubs here but since I know this one I really don't need to discover others, this one is perfect, good ambiance and ales, nice service Awful, dirty and the staff were very rude.

Friendly local pub, with dogs and an open fire - in (nearly) city center Edinburgh!

Recommended by local retired Llb, whilst walking the town searching in vain for ale house that best belonged in gentler times... Kays is that pub...serving excellent hand pulled ales kept in in fine fettle by mine host who also drinks there (good sign)good selection of house wines thoughtfully kept at correct temps.,congenial barman (not person)with handlebar moustache.

locals very friendly whils't not in your face atmosphere first class a real gem.

A small and intimate atmosphere with friendly bar staff, good ales and (for Edinburgh) friendly punters.

Kay's Bar Edinburgh | Spotted by Locals

Kay’s Bar is a brilliant wee bar in the heart of the New Town, just off of India Street.

It’s not cool or trendy but it is an atmospheric Victorian bar that even a lot of the locals haven’t spotted!

It is pretty small so it gets really packed on a Friday night, but it’s a great place to go on a weekend afternoon,  or in the dark nights of winter, when the woodfire might be on.

It does a great range of beers, both the usual big brands as well as some great cask ales from all over the UK.

If you are new to whiskies, ask for one from Speyside, they are the smoothest.

Kay's Bar (39 Jamaica Street, Edinburgh) | The List

A classic New Town pub, small and unimposing next to the grand tenements around it but filled with a diverse clientele from all walks of life, Kay’s old-fashioned Victorian charm remains intact.

With no music on it’s a pub for conversation in the open-front bar or the snug in the back, but its legacy as one of the city’s best rugby pubs means you’d best take an interest if there’s a televised match on.

Take the stairs down and come out by the Bow Bar: a super little place, with a good atmosphere that’s great for beer – it’s a surprisingly new pub despite its authentic interior.

Ideal for: Architecture lovers – this walk takes you from the fine interior of the renowned Cafe Royal through the stunning New Town.

Malt and Hops is a great, atmospheric place with a good selection of beers.

Ideal for: Beer lovers – The Stockbridge Tap, Malt and Hops and Teuchters Landing are all renowned for their ale selections.

Bear left past the tennis courts and come out on Buccleuch Street and head to the Dagda Bar – a lovely place, excellent beers, great atmosphere, it’s quite popular with students.

Cosy, enjoyably chatty backstreet pub with good value lunchtime food and an excellent choice of well kept beers They keep a marvellous choice of drinks in this busy little back street pub that includes seven real ales on handpump such as Caledonian Deuchars IPA and Theakstons Best, plus guests such as Campbells Gunner, Hop Studio Blonde, Stewart Telos, Thwaites Wainwright, Tryst Double Chocolate Porter and Timothy Taylors Landlord; they also stock more than 50 malt whiskies aged from eight to 50 years old, 15 gins and half a dozen wines by the glass.

There's an eclectic mix of customers and an enjoyable local feel, with long, curving, well worn, red plush wall banquettes and stools around cast-iron tables on red carpet, and red pillars supporting a red ceiling.

Décor is simple with big casks and vats arranged along the walls, old wine and spirits merchants' notices and gas-type lamps.

A quiet panelled back room (a bit like a library) leads off, with a narrow, plank-panelled pitched ceiling and a collection of books ranging from dictionaries to ancient steam-train books for boys; a lovely coal fire in winter, and board games.

In days past, the pub was owned by John Kay, a whisky and wine merchant; wine barrels were hoisted up to the first floor and dispensed through pipes attached to nipples that are still visible around the ceiling light rose.
