The Dowager chose the 'burnt' tomato bruschetta with whipped goats cheese on sourdough with anchovies.
Thumbs up for both and, importantly, for the wines; both from the Languedoc and red for me as Cau is Malbec heaven.
All steaks are aged for 30 days and include a side although my salad was too pepper heavy for me - I am a simple lettuce, tomato, cucumber gal.
The Dowager polished off chocolate fondant with ice cream which was warm, oozy and flavoursome in all the right places.
Cau has everything you desire from cocktails and bubbles to salads and smoothies, all dished up in a stylish cosmopolitan setting.
Press Coverage | Veeno
It has already proved a hit since launching in Manchester four years ago and now Veeno, The Italian Wine Café, has taken a prime spot at Cardiff’s Mermaid Quay.
And if you are a wine lover, and love nothing better than nibbling on chesse and meat platters while sipping Sicilian wine, you will definitely want to head here when it opens in July.

CAU Edinburgh – Bar area Starters can be chosen from the small plates menu and sharing is the best way to enjoy these tasty bites.
CAU Edinburgh Rib Eye Steak The onion rings (£2.95) were a must and they were deliciously light and crispy and their CAUslaw (which I normally can’t bear) is worth a try – an unlikely combination of crunchy red cabbage, vinegar and condensed milk.
I prefer my steaks a bit rarer but the beef was still tender and flavoursome and the herby green chimichurri sauce (£1.25) was a refreshing change from the usual cloying accompaniments.
Cornflake Sundae CAU Edinburgh manages to be a chain but without feeling like one and much of this is down to the staff who are friendly, knowledgeable and care.
The CAU menu also offers something a bit different which it delivers to a very high standard and is fantastic value for money.
CAU - Edinburgh
Channeling the vibrancy of Buenos Aires in their food, CAU gives Argentine steak the attention it deserves.
Enjoy CAU's grass-fed, 30-day-aged beef with the perfect additions – truffled mac n cheese, triple cooked chips and a bottle of Argentinian Malbec.
